Top 3 Films About Traveling to Outer Space

April 24th, 2013 Books/Audio/Video

It seems like movies always take place in New York, Paris, Chicago or one of the other major cities in the world, and sometimes people may get tired of seeing the same scenery time and time again. However, one setting that never gets old is outer space. There's something so mysterious and interesting about the outer reaches of the universe that it always makes for an interesting place to put characters. While all movies about space tend to be interesting, some are better than others. Here are the top three films that take place in space.

1. "2001: A Space Odyssey" - This 1968 film directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick follows space explorers as they set off to find answers after discovering a mysterious object buried in the surface of the moon. What follows is a fascinating story that helped define the science fiction genre and remains popular decades later.

2. "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" - While all of the Star Wars films are classics, this is probably the best one to start with. These movies follow the story of the Jedis, fighters who are part of the Rebel Alliance who are determined to defeat their evil counterparts, who are part of the Galactic Empire. The groundbreaking special effects used in this 1977 film from director George Lucas gained the Star Wars films a fiercely loyal following that spans generations.

3. "Alien" - This terrifying film from director Ridley Scott is about a group of commercial miners in space who encounter some extra-terrestrials who are less than friendly. Known as the film that helped propel actress Sigourney Weaver to stardom, it's both fascinating and frightening, and shouldn't be missed by anyone who's interested in aliens or space exploration..
