How to Make an Applesauce Cake

This summer, don't bring the same old coleslaw or bucket of store-bought cookies to your barbecues - make something that will truly surprise and impress people. While chocolate cake and pies are always staples at these summer events, you should try making a different dessert, like an applesauce cake. This cake is not only delicious, but it's also perfect for summer because people love to refresh themselves with fruit-based desserts on hot summer days. 

To make this recipe, there are some ingredients you absolutely need, while others you can play around with. For example, both Food Network and Taste of Home magazine call for 2 cups of flour and 1 1/2 to 2 cups of applesauce, as well as 1/2 cup of raisins. However, when it comes to the other ingredients, the amount you put and the things you choose depend on how healthy you want this cake to be. For instance, Taste of Home states that you can use 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 cup of walnuts and 1/2 cup of egg substitute if you want to have a healthy cake. Food Network calls for double the amount of all of these ingredients, as well as two regular eggs. 

To split the difference, consider using this recipe that combines the two. You'll need 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of sweetened or unsweetened applesauce, 1 cup of sugar, two eggs, 1/4 cup of canola oil, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 cup of raisins, 1/2 cup of walnuts and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. 

To make the cake, combine the applesauce, sugar, oil and eggs in a bowl and mix well. Then add the dry ingredients and fold in the walnuts and raisins. Pour the mixture into a greased pan and cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick can be inserted into it and come out clean.
