Knee pain is something that people of all ages to deal with. In fact, it's one of the most common ailments out there. Naturally, discomfort or pain in the knees could be easily cleared up by something simple like aspirin, or it may indicate a larger problem. The only way to know for sure is to visit your doctor. Here are some of the most common conditions that arise in one's knees and what you can do to keep them in good shape for years to come.

According to the Mayo Clinic, different symptoms manifest at varying levels of intensity, depending on what's wrong with your knee. However, some of the most common symptoms include stiffness, and swelling, instability or an inability to fully straighten the knee. Some of these problems may clear up on their own after a day or two and won't require a visit to the doctor. However, if you're unable to bear any weight on your knees, are experiencing fever in addition to swelling or have fallen because your knees have given out, you should consider making an appointment as soon as possible.

The National Institutes of Health reports that osteoarthritis is one of the most common knee problems in older individuals. The condition is characterized by a wearing away of the cartilage in the knee, which can cause pain, inflammation and general weakness in the limb. You may also be suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, which may require physical therapy or knee replacement surgery.

Active individuals may be suffering from a tendon injury due to overuse. If this is the case with you, rest, ice and elevation should be your primary means of treatment. If problems persist, consult your doctor and limit your physical activity until the problem is treated.
