How to Find the Right Athletic Shoe

The right athletic shoe can help you comfortably get through your exercise routine. Don't know what features to look for? Don't worry - these tips will help you decide which kind of footwear is best for your body and preferred method of exercise.

Foot type
Everyone has different types of feet and ways of walking, so it's important to understand how your feet work and what they need before buying a pair of shoes. Check out a pair of old flats to see evidence of your unique shape and stride.

1. If the outer edge of your shoe is the most worn, you likely have a high arch and your gait rolls outward. This means you need cushioning sneakers for shock absorption.

2. If the soles of your old shoes are evenly worn, you have an equal weight distribution, which means you need a shoe with stability to balance cushioning and support.

3. If the inner soles of your shoes are battered, you probably have flat feet or low arches and your feet roll inward. You need motion-control or high-stability sneakers to keep your feet aligned with your legs.

Running or cross-training
Running shoes are good if you do simple routines that involve a lot of running or walking because they're designed for heel to toe movement. Unlike walking shoes, running footwear is designed for a wider variety of feet and are generally more durable. Cross-trainers are good if your exercise program involves aerobics, kickboxing or weight training because they support side-to-side movement.

It's time to get a new pair of running shoes if you notice that the midsole (between the upper part and the tread) has deep-set wrinkles or looks squished!
