Natural Remedies for Arthritis Pain

Arthritis pain can be a hindrance to many daily activities, but there are some methods to help curb the discomfort from home. These tips may help get you moving again.

Hot and cold packs
Using ice packs or other cold compresses can help temporarily reduce the pain of an arthritis flare-up, according to WebMD. Applying a cold surface to the arthritis-affected area for 15 to 30 minutes at a time can help reduce the bone and joint swelling that causes discomfort. 

Heat is another easy way to reduce arthritis pain. Simply standing in the shower or climbing into a hot tub can help relax muscles and increase blood flow, and this can greatly reduce the pain. Microwaveable heat packs are also effective, and they're portable enough to take places where a hot shower or a soak in the hot tub isn't available. 

Exercise
Easy going exercises like walking, yoga or water aerobics can be good for arthritis pain, states the Mayo Clinic. Keeping the affected joints sedentary may cause them to ultimately hurt more, so it's important to employ a variety of stretches and strength-building movements to stay ahead of your arthritis. Building stronger muscles around your joints will help keep pressure off them and give them time to heal. 

Always check with your doctor to see if certain exercises would be suitable for your arthritis type and joint condition before heavily engaging in them. Also, try not to put excessive pressure on any joints that are very tender or actually swollen - it's better to wait for the swelling to go down first. 

Relaxation
While exercise is good for arthritis pain, relaxation also has its place. Staying relaxed through breathing exercises and guided meditations can help you sleep throughout the night, which will make you feel better and can even help you focus on things other than the pain.
