The speed at which the body burns calories is different for everyone, but there's no reason to fret if you weren't blessed with a fast one. There are ways you can help your metabolism gain speed and burn more calories - just use these tips from Redbook magazine and WebMD.

1. Eat breakfast in the morning. Because your metabolism slows when you sleep, it doesn't start back up again until you eat something. Taking part in a healthy breakfast will ensure you're burning calories all the way up until lunch time.

2. Build up some muscle. People with more muscle in their bodies burn more calories when they're resting because the muscles need energy to sustain themselves. Try incorporating strength and resistance training into your exercise routine.

3. Get plenty of aerobic exercise. Push yourself to do more high-intensity exercise and you'll have a faster metabolism for hours afterward.

4. Eat small meals throughout the day. Snacking more instead of eating three heavy meals can keep your metabolism working 24/7. You'll also be less tempted to overeat this way.

5. Drink plenty of water. Even if you're only a little bit dehydrated, your metabolism can slow down. Try to down a glass before every meal or snack, and eat plenty of foods like fruit and vegetables, which have water in them.

6. Incorporate hot peppers into a few of your meals. The compound capsaicin, found in cayenne peppers and jalapenos, can temporarily boost your metabolism.
